Can't Beat the Tweet

While Facebook seems to get most of the mainstream press these days, let's not forget about all the good work Twitter does for business. Emerging as the B2B tool, it's used by an older demographic and by businesses with increasingly higher sales entry points.

Here are some facts on the state of Twitter:

* Twitter now has 122 million registered users.
* Site is growing at a rate of nearly 10% over previous months.
* 180 million unique visitors come to the site every month.
* 25% of the user base accounts for nearly all the traffic. Power users dominate.
* Of Twitter's active users, 37% use their phone to tweet.
* In 2007, there were 5,000 tweets per day; today there are 50 million per day.
* The average tweets per day by an average user is 4.3; skewed by a small majority, the real number is only 1-2 tweets a day.
* The average user has 103.3 followers; again skewed by the top 5%, like Ashton and Oprah whose numbers are in the millions.
